Framed oil painting on canvas depicting a young girl standing beside a St. Bernard in a garden before a country home. The work is signed “J. Colvin” in the lower right. The composition is a rendition of On Guard, an image associated with illustrator R. Atkinson Fox, who frequently used the pseudonym “J. Colvin” on published works. Fox was a Canadian-born American illustrator known for popular calendar art, advertising, and genre scenes during the early 20th century.
The canvas exhibits areas of lifting and flaking paint with associated craquelure, as well as scattered surface grime and age-related wear. The painting has not been examined outside the frame. The frame is structurally sound and exhibits light surface wear consistent with age.
