C-21797

Artist: Alfred J. Haller (~1900-1957)
Date: Early-to-Mid 20th Century
Medium: Etching on paper
Style/Movement: Tonalist / American Landscape

Additional Details:
Panoramic landscape etching depicting a quiet waterfront scene with cottages, a dock, moored sailing vessels, and a lone rowboat set against calm reflective waters. Executed in delicate tonal gradations and fine linear cross hatching, the composition exemplifies the atmospheric quality favored by American etchers around the turn of the twentieth century. The work is attributed to Alfred J. Haller and appears to bear an embossed signature in the lower right margin. The surviving period framing label from an Akron, Ohio picture framer further supports an early twentieth-century presentation and adds to the work’s historical character.

Displays age-related toning, light foxing, and scattered discoloration throughout. Noticeable dust and debris are present beneath the glass. A distinct area of surface damage is visible near the lower center of the print where adhesive tape appears to have once been applied and later removed prior to framing, leaving behind areas of paper disruption and uneven coloration. The wooden frame exhibits heavy scratches, scattered dents, and finish wear consistent with age and handling. The original paper backing is heavily deteriorated with tears, losses, and separation but remains partially intact, preserving the period framer’s label from The C.H. Yeager Company, House Furnishers, Picture Frames and Framing to Order, Akron, Ohio. The etching appears to retain its embossed signature in the lower right margin and remains housed behind glass.
