Description

C-21795

c. 1920s; Western Stoneware Company – Monmouth, IL

Salt-glazed stoneware jug featuring a cylindrical body with a brown Albany-slip glazed shoulder, applied strap handle, and short pouring neck. The front bears the company’s maple leaf trademark, a hallmark used by Western Stoneware on many of its utilitarian wares during the early twentieth century. Jugs of this form were commonly used for storing and transporting whiskey, cider, vinegar, maple syrup, and other household liquids, prized for their durability and non-reactive stoneware construction. This example retains its classic two-tone finish and displays the honest wear associated with years of practical use.

Overall good antique condition with age-related wear including scattered surface scuffs, discoloration, and manufacturing imperfections typical of early stoneware. Wax residue remains in the mouth of the jug with wax drips running down the glazed shoulder from its later use as a candle holder. A chip is present along the upper edge of the stoneware body at the transition to the glazed shoulder, exposing the underlying clay as photographed. Light wear is present along the unglazed base rim from use. The maple leaf maker’s mark is partially worn but remains visible. No major cracks or structural damage observed.
