Early farm implement manufacturers across the Midwest and Northeast produced simple, reliable hand planters that allowed small farms to increase planting efficiency before mechanical seed drills became common. A farmhouse hand corn planter built with a long wooden scissor-frame, a cast iron seed tube, and paired handles for one-handed lift and two-handed compression. The operator would load kernels into the iron chamber, stride down the row, and squeeze the handles to drop measured seeds into the soil through the tapered metal foot-an efficient, low-tech tool that dramatically reduced planting labor for small homesteads.
The piece retains its original cast iron feed tube and forged drop foot, with the wooden arms showing worn edges, field scuffs, and the kind of smoothened handling wear earned through years of early-season planting work.
