Description

C-15517

This charming Victorian-era die-cut trade card features a romantic lithographed scene of a man rowing a flower-filled boat with a stylish woman and her lapdog seated beneath a parasol. The boat bears the printed advertisement: "Compliments of J.L. Hudson, Opera House Building, Detroit, Mich." The card has been attractively matted and framed under glass with a green and salmon double mat and a diagonally striped molded frame. Issued as a premium by Detroit’s famed J.L. Hudson Company, this piece likely dates to the 1880s-1890s, when elaborately illustrated trade cards were widely used to promote department stores and retailers. J.L. Hudson’s would go on to become one of the largest and most iconic department stores in the Midwest by the early 20th century.

Bright color and strong lithography with minimal fading. Light wear to corners of the die-cut card. Frame has minor scuffing along the lower edge. This piece has not been inspected outside of the frame.
