Pair of utilitarian stoneware jugs including: • A smaller salt-glazed cylinder crock with applied brown Albany-slip jug insert, one-gallon size. • A larger cream stoneware jug with double blue band decoration, applied handle, and tapered spout. Both examples showcase classic American stoneware forms of the early 20th century, made for everyday storage and transport of liquids such as whiskey, cider, or syrup. Their sturdy construction and simple decoration speak to the utilitarian nature of rural and working-class households of the period. Stoneware production in the United States peaked in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with regional potteries supplying crocks, churns, and jugs to general stores across the country. These durable pieces were often reused for decades.
Condition shows wear, with surface glaze chips, scuffing, and a partial loss of paper label on the larger jug. Both remain structurally sound.
