Rectangular five-gallon metal petroleum can featuring original striped lithographed surface advertising “GOES FARTHER – DEEP ROCK – LASTS LONGER – PETROLEUM PRODUCTS.” The front panel retains bold period typography framed by vertical striping, with lower text reading “Manufactured by Shaffer Oil and Refining Company – Chicago” and “Contents Five Gallons.” The can is constructed of heavy-gauge steel with a formed top handle and adjustable pouring spout assembly. The spout cap and hinged handle remain intact.
Shows significant surface wear, oxidation, paint loss, and areas of graphic fading consistent with age and use. Surface rust present throughout, particularly along edges and seams. Adjustable spout mechanism intact. Overall structurally solid with heavy patina and authentic period wear.
