c. 1890s-1910s; Henry Alcock & Co. – Cobridge, Staffordshire, England
Flow blue chop plate in the "Touraine" pattern.
This large, flat round serving plate by Henry Alcock & Co. is decorated in the "Touraine" pattern, with cobalt floral transfers softened into the semi-porcelain body through the flow blue process. The broad surface allows the decoration to spread in diffuse clusters, framed by a deep cobalt border at the rim with traces of gilt. Intended as a presentation piece for meats or roasts, chop plates like this served as both functional and decorative highlights of the Victorian dining table. Stamped beneath with the Alcock shield crest and "Touraine" mark.
Some light knife marks.
