Lot 72:
Description
C-21784
Heavy plank-built wooden carpenter’s tool chest with reinforced frame-and-plank construction, featuring flush cast iron handles, hinged lid, interior divisions, and remnants of original tool holders under lid. Built for portability and daily use, chests like this were produced in the second half of the nineteenth century, circa 1860s – 1880s.
Chest has minor paint splatters and water stains, scratches, nicks, and finish wear throughout consistent with age and use. Front hardware is missing. One front board of the lid is loose. Hinges no longer support the lid, and the rear lid joints are separating on both corners at the hinge side; lid should be supported while open. Age-related gaps are present between several boards, with breakage and losses along the top of the lid. Nails protrude into the interior, and the interior tool holders exhibit losses and wear. Despite the lid issues, the chest remains solid and structurally sturdy overall.
