c. 1940s; H.S. McCracken Box and Label Co. – Chicago, IL

Compact steel file box produced by H.S. McCracken Co. of Chicago, labeled "Smooth Arch Prescription File – Small Size." Constructed with textured steel panels and a single pull-ring handle, this unit was originally designed to hold indexed prescription records for pharmacies or medical offices. The front retains its original printed label marked "258001-259000." The piece reflects midcentury American manufacturing’s clean, pragmatic approach to office and laboratory organization.

Founded in the early 20th century, H.S. McCracken Co. specialized in durable filing systems and custom-printed record boxes for medical, industrial, and institutional use throughout the United States.
