c. 1920s-1940s; Shenango China Company – New Castle, PA; Columbia Metal Products Co. – Dunbar, WV; Mug Maker Unknown Assorted three-piece grouping of early twentieth-century American tableware including a Shenango China bowl, a decorative plate, and a brown glazed barrel-form mug. The bowl features a warm cream glaze with subtle mottled coloration and bears the Shenango China Company mark from New Castle, Pennsylvania, depicting a Native American figure seated on a rock-one of the firm’s recognizable early trademarks. Shenango was a major American manufacturer known for durable restaurant and institutional china throughout the twentieth century. The plate displays a softly aged ivory field framed by a black Art Deco-inspired border pattern with stylized geometric accents and vine-like ornamentation. Completing the group is a brown glazed ceramic mug molded in the form of a wooden barrel, with vertical stave texture and banding around the rim and base. The mug’s interior carries a stamp for Columbia Metal Products Co., Dunbar, West Virginia, an industrial manufacturer whose wares were often distributed through restaurant supply channels and novelty drinkware markets.
All pieces show moderate wear consistent with age and use including glaze discoloration, surface marks, and staining visible in the photos. No major cracks observed.
