c. 1930s-1940s; Earl May Seed Company – Shenandoah, IA Printed cotton farm seed sack advertising "Banner Alf. & Ens." and "Earl May Maygold Farm Seed, " featuring a bold graphic of an ear of corn pouring kernels into a blue pot marked with a dollar sign. The design is executed in red, blue, and yellow ink against natural cotton, with vertical side text reading "Maygold Farm Seed." Lower text notes "Earl May Seed Co., Shenandoah, Iowa" and "Missouri and Iowa Seedsman’s Permit No. 20." The reverse remains largely plain, retaining a small red inspection stamp near the upper center. Earl May Seed Company, founded in 1919, became one of the Midwest’s prominent regional seed suppliers, distributing hybrid and farm seed varieties throughout Iowa and neighboring states. Printed feed and seed sacks like this served both as packaging and advertisement, often repurposed on farms for storage or household use once emptied.
Wear consistent with age and agricultural use, including surface staining, light discoloration, creasing, and minor fraying along edges. Ink remains legible and colors retain good contrast.
