Description

C-17474

Heavy-gauge metal railroad oiler used by the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad (CRI&P). The cylindrical reservoir features a long tapered spout for precise application of oil to locomotives and rolling stock, along with a side handle and hinged filler cap secured by chain. Such oilers were essential tools for maintaining bearings, joints, and other moving parts under demanding service conditions. Marked "C R P RY" The Rock Island Line, chartered in 1847, operated across much of the Midwest and Great Plains, becoming a major carrier until its dissolution in 1980. Equipment such as this oiler reflects the practical, durable implements relied upon by railroad workers in the steam and early diesel eras.

Surface wear, dents, and oxidation present throughout, consistent with heavy industrial use. Retains original form with cap and chain intact. Top of handle has broken off from can.
