c. 1880s; Meriden Britannia Company – Meridian, CT Charming Victorian silverplate napkin ring depicting a young girl feeding her small terrier, mounted on a rectangular base beside a cylindrical napkin holder. The sculpted figures are finely detailed, from the folds of the child’s dress to the texture of the dog’s fur, all finished in a warm gilt tone. The underside is marked and numbered 199. Pieces like this were part of the 19th-century tradition of figural napkin rings that blended domestic utility with decorative artistry, often produced as table novelties or children’s giftware. Meriden B Co., established in the late 19th century in Connecticut, was one of several manufacturers under the Meriden Britannia and International Silver umbrella-known for its highly detailed silverplate designs and figural tablewares.
Moderate patination and surface wear consistent with age; light gilt fading in areas, no breaks or repairs noted.
