c. 1910s-1920s; Western Stoneware Co. – Monmouth, IL Pair of small Sleepy Eye stoneware cream pitchers featuring the iconic blue portrait of Chief Sleepy Eye surrounded by teepees, trees, and landscape motifs rendered in deep cobalt flow. Each piece bears the distinctive eagle-head handle and softly blushed transition between the cream body and blue glaze-hallmarks of the Sleepy Eye line produced for promotional and household use in the early 20th century. The Western Stoneware Co. of Monmouth, Illinois, formed in 1906 through the consolidation of seven regional potteries including Monmouth Pottery, became one of the Midwest’s leading producers of utilitarian and decorative stoneware. Their Sleepy Eye pieces, made for the Sleepy Eye Milling Company of Minnesota, are among their most collectible lines today.
Displays uniform age crazing, minor glaze wear, and light base discoloration consistent with age; no visible cracks or repairs.
