c. 1910s-1920s; The McCaskey Register Co. – Alliance, OH Oak credit register cabinet with fold-out metal binder racks, mirrored front panel with remnants of original gold stenciling, and lower storage drawer. The interior retains multiple "Surety" sales pads and printed credit slips, held within spring-loaded wire retainers. The inside back panel bears original painted lettering reading "Do Not Forget That the Famous Surety Non-Smut Carbon Sales Pads are Made and Sold Only by The McCaskey Register Co., Alliance, Ohio." Invented by Charles C. McCaskey in the early 20th century, the McCaskey register was an innovative system for small businesses to track customer credit before the widespread use of cash registers with integrated record-keeping. By keeping detailed paper slips organized by account, grocers and merchants could easily reference outstanding balances, revolutionizing bookkeeping for everyday trade.
Condition shows heavy wear from commercial use including loss to mirror silvering, fading to stenciled graphics, and general surface wear to oak case; original pads present but aged.
