General Antiques and Collectibles Spring Auction
Lot 43:
Description
C-15507
This early 20th-century tin lithographed toy crane features a red and yellow tower design with bold geometric striping and an integrated chain-operated mine cart scoop. The mechanism includes a rail-guided cart that tilts to empty its load, mimicking the action of industrial ore handling equipment. A bucket suspended by chain can be raised and lowered manually, enhancing the interactive functionality of the toy. This style of tin construction toy was commonly manufactured in the 1920s-1930s by American and European makers including Louis Marx & Co., Distler, or other German firms producing pressed tin toys. The combination of mechanical action and lithographed design reflects the industrial optimism and engineering fascination of the interwar period.
Moderate surface oxidation, scattered paint loss, and wear to litho finish. Mechanism intact though untested. Chain shows darkening with age. Displays well with strong visual presence.
