Description

C-15501

This hand-colored illustration, signed by an artist with the surname Wilson, was published in 1904 by M. Walter Dunne as part of a deluxe illustrated edition of Tancred; or, The New Crusade by Benjamin Disraeli. The image depicts a scene from the novel in which Lord Montacute, the idealistic protagonist, seeks spiritual enlightenment and understanding in the Holy Land. Tancred was the final installment in Disraeli’s "Young England" political novel trilogy, reflecting the former British Prime Minister’s commentary on class, religion, and the shifting values of Victorian society. M. Walter Dunne was a prominent American publisher known for his finely bound, illustrated literary volumes produced in the early 20th century.

Surface wear to the gilded frame including scuffing, edge abrasions, and areas of finish loss. Print appears well-preserved but has not been inspected outside of the frame.
