c. 1900s/1910s; W. D. Suggs – Smithville, Mississippi This salt-glazed stoneware butter churn was produced by W. D. Suggs of Smithville, Mississippi, a noted Southern potter active in the early 1900s. The churn features a cylindrical form with applied lug handles, a rolled rim, and cobalt stenciled "4" capacity mark along with double cobalt stripes around the shoulder. It retains its original stoneware lid and wooden dasher, used in the traditional churning of cream into butter. A regional example of Mississippi pottery, it reflects the enduring craft tradition of local potters who supplied durable wares for farm and household use.
The piece exhibits a warm, aged surface with glaze runs, wear, and small firing imperfections typical of utilitarian stoneware. Please note this crock is missing a handle.
