Description

C-17782

Classic handheld stereoscope featuring a shaped wooden frame, adjustable card holder, and twin glass lenses set into a curved metal-rimmed hood covered in black leatherette. The design allowed users to view stereographic cards in three dimensions, an immensely popular form of parlor entertainment and education during the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Stereoscopes like this were widely produced in the late 1800s and early 1900s, marketed through photographic suppliers and department stores. They were instrumental in bringing faraway places, historic events, and cultural curiosities into the home, reflecting both technological ingenuity and the public’s appetite for immersive visual experiences.

Surface wear to wood, scuffs and small losses to leatherette hood, oxidation to hardware, and light clouding to lenses, consistent with age and use. Structurally sound with movable card holder intact.
