c. 1890s-1900s; Mence Smith – England Salt-glazed stoneware foot warmer with a cylindrical body, fitted screw-top cap, and rounded handle end. The body bears the maker’s mark for Mence Smith, a known British manufacturer of household ceramics and utilitarian wares during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods. These foot warmers were designed to be filled with hot water and placed at the foot of a bed, offering warmth through long winter nights before the advent of electric heating. The warm stoneware radiated heat gradually, making it a trusted domestic companion in cold, drafty homes. The cream-colored body with contrasting brown-glazed top and cap is characteristic of Mence Smith’s sturdy and practical approach to everyday pottery.
Shows minor glaze wear and small firing imperfections consistent with age and use; cap threads remain intact.
