c. 1960s; 1967; Rand McNally & Company – Chicago, IL, USA
Group of six Gulf Oil “Tourgide” folding road maps printed by Rand McNally and distributed through Gulf service stations during the 1960s. Examples include regional editions for Kansas and Oklahoma, North and South Dakota / Nebraska, Pennsylvania / Delaware / Maryland / West Virginia, Texas / Arkansas / Louisiana / Mississippi, Minnesota and Wisconsin, and a United States overview map. Each cover features the familiar illustrated Gulf service station scene with the orange Gulf disc logo and the slogan “Stop at the sign of the orange disc.”
Interior maps present detailed highway networks, mileage charts, town indexes, and city insets typical of mid-century Rand McNally cartography. The reverse panels advertise the “Your Gulf Travel Card” program along with period travel promotions such as Holiday Inn listings and rental car services.
Shows light age-related handling wear including fold lines and minor edge wear. Maps appear free from major tears and remain bright and legible overall. Several are housed in protective sleeves.
