C-19387

c. 1890s/1900s; Daniel Scotten & Co. – Detroit, Michigan

Compact rectangular lithographed tobacco tin marked “Straight Perique – Long Cut Smoking, ” featuring ornate period typography and figural side panel graphics. The hinged lid opens to a clean, tinned interior, while the underside carries a detailed factory notice reading “Factory No. 1, First District of Michigan” along with manufacturing information for Daniel Scotten & Co., Detroit. The exterior retains its original brown marbled finish with black printed lettering, now mellowed with age and surface patina. The hinge remains intact, and the box maintains its crisp rectangular form despite evident age. Perique tobacco, grown in St. James Parish, Louisiana, was prized for its strength and distinctive fermentation process.

Shows notable age-related wear including surface rust spotting, oxidation along edges and lid seam, finish loss to corners, and light interior discoloration. Graphics remain legible with honest patina throughout.
