Description

C-19321

Wheel-thrown stoneware pitcher with applied strap handle, tooled bands at the shoulder and base, and bold freehand cobalt decoration. The front features a triple-loop brushstroke motif beneath double cobalt bands, while additional banding encircles the rim and foot. A small incised “1” appears near the handle—likely denoting capacity. The glaze is a warm, creamy salt or alkaline tone with visible throwing lines inside the body and subtle firing variations throughout. The spout is hand-shaped with a soft pinch pour, and the cobalt shows natural bleed into the clay body, consistent with 19th-century American production.

Shows light surface wear consistent with age, including minor glaze imperfections, scattered small surface marks, and typical firing irregularities. No visible cracks; structurally sound with tight handle attachment.
