c. 1890s-1910s; Henry Alcock & Co. – Cobridge, Staffordshire, England

Flow blue embossed cake plate in the "Touraine" pattern.

This semi-porcelain cake plate by Henry Alcock & Co. is decorated in the "Touraine" floral transfer, softened into the body through the flow blue technique. The rim is not only framed by a bold cobalt border with gilt remnants, but also embossed with a repeating bamboo-and-bead motif, adding textural depth to the decoration. The central field is adorned with blurred sprays of blossoms, giving it the distinctive painterly quality of late-Victorian flow blue ware. Plates of this size and finish were often used for cakes, pastries, or small presentations at the tea table.
