Description

C-17985

A matched pair of small cast iron bookends formed with a peaked, temple-like silhouette and a hammered-texture face. Each features a raised circular medallion depicting a classical mythological scene-two robed figures beside an altar beneath a stylized branch or laurel-executed in low relief and highlighted with traces of original gilt. Finished in a deep reddish-brown patina with warm brass undertones along the edges, the pair shows honest age and the kind of crisp casting characteristic of early American decorative ironwork. Heavy for their size, they stand well and present with a quiet, architectural solidity.

Moderate surface wear, scattered patination, and finish thinning along the high points as shown.
