c. 1910s/1920s; Raadvad Knife Factory – Raadvad, Denmark Heavy cast iron hand-crank slicer with arched frame marked Raadvad beneath a crown, paired with a slanted wooden cutting platform. Founded in 1758 near Copenhagen, Raadvad is Denmark’s oldest knife manufacturer, renowned for high-quality blades and kitchen equipment. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the company introduced robust cast iron slicers like this example, intended for bread, cured meats, and cheeses in both household and shop settings. Its large half-moon blade pivots smoothly within the frame, while the wood base guides loaves or cuts into uniform slices. Built for durability, these slicers became a staple across Scandinavia and remain highly collectible examples of utilitarian design.
Condition shows oxidation to the cast iron, wear to the cutting edge, and surface scratches to the wood platform, all consistent with use. Retains full maker’s mark with crown emblem.
