c. 1950s-1960s; Gerz – Höhr-Grenzhausen, West Germany Tall, tapering stoneware beer stein featuring an ornate relief design with medieval motifs, including a central depiction of Emperor Carolus (Charlemagne) surrounded by scrollwork, cherubic masks, and architectural detailing. The textured brown glaze enhances the dimensionality of the raised decoration, while the stein is completed with a pewter lid and dark curved handle. A fine example of postwar German craftsmanship continuing the centuries-old Westerwald pottery tradition. The Gerz pottery company, founded in 1862 in Höhr-Grenzhausen, was one of Germany’s most prolific producers of steins and stoneware vessels. Their work combined traditional salt-glazed and relief-molded designs with modernized production techniques, earning a reputation for consistent quality throughout the 20th century.
Light surface wear and mild patination to pewter lid; otherwise excellent condition.
