Two hand-decorated stoneware steins with pewter lids, each inscribed with traditional German drinking mottos. The first stein features a jovial tavern-goer raising a jug over a barrel, framed by a textured field and accented with the inscription: "Ein guter Trunk ist jedem recht, dem Fürsten, Bauer und dem Knecht" ("A good drink is good for everyone: the prince, the farmer, and the servant"). Its lid is plain pewter, hinged at the handle. The second stein bears a colorful heraldic crest with gymnastic symbols and motto: "Übung gibt Kraft, Bier gibt Leben" ("Exercise builds strength, but it is beer that gives life"). Its ornate pewter lid is finely cast with scrollwork, goat head, and acanthus details, inscribed "A. Gutmann" along the rim, likely the name of the original owner. Both pieces reflect the popular marriage of stoneware and pewter in German drinking culture, carrying forward centuries of brewing tradition into the early 20th century.
Condition shows scattered glaze wear, crazing, minor surface scratches, and light dents to pewter lids. Graphics and inscriptions remain clear and well-preserved.
