Description

C-21638

Original ink drawing on brown paper depicting two formally dressed dancers in a synchronized pose with outstretched arms and crossed legs. The composition is identified in the lower right as “Julian Martin and George Devere” and bears a handwritten presentation inscription in the lower left reading, “For Johnny from Red Happy New Year 1964.” Rendered in a bold, simplified graphic style, the figures recall the theatrical cabaret illustrations popularized by early 20th-century artists such as Georges Goursat (“Sem”). The artwork is attractively presented beneath a linen mat in a natural wood frame with paper-covered backing and hanging wire.

The personalized inscription suggests the drawing was created as a commemorative or presentation piece, likely celebrating a performance, friendship, or New Year’s gathering. Its minimalist execution and identified subjects give it the character of a theatrical or nightclub keepsake from the mid-20th century.

Shows light age-related wear. Artwork exhibits minor toning, scattered handling marks, and light waviness to the paper consistent with age. Linen mat remains clean with a few small spots of discoloration. Frame shows light scratches and minor finish wear. Back retains its original paper covering and hanging wire with expected age-related wear.
