Description
This item is presented to you in partnership with Heirloom Estate Sales of Sycamore, IL.
NOTE: The canoe is NOT included with the sale of the vehicle. It is only included in photos for demonstration.
1971 Dodge Sportsman extended 1-ton camper van powered by a 318 cubic-inch V8 engine and factory-equipped with a period pop-up camper conversion. Finished in blue and white, the van features a raising canvas roof that provides standing room and an upper sleeping bunk, along with a camper interior including fold-down bench seating, sink, compact refrigerator/icebox, storage cabinetry, fresh water system, auxiliary electrical provisions, and space for a portable toilet. A roof-mounted canoe rack remains installed, reflecting the vehicle’s extensive travel history. According to the consignor, the van is believed to be a two-owner vehicle whose longtime owners traveled throughout the United States, including Alaska, racing canoes. It reportedly covered virtually every major highway in North America before being parked inside a steel building with a concrete floor approximately 35 years ago.
Vehicle presents as an unrestored survivor and restoration candidate showing prolonged storage and age-related deterioration throughout. Exterior displays oxidation, scratches, scuffs, paint loss, and widespread corrosion, with heavy rust and perforation concentrated along the rocker panels, lower body seams, wheel arches, door bottoms, step area, and lower quarter panels. A noticeable dent is present in the front hood panel. Chrome and trim exhibit oxidation and weathering. Pop-up roof remains present, though the canvas condition should be considered aged and untested. Interior appears substantially complete but exhibits heavy dust accumulation, staining, scattered deterioration, and loose contents from long-term storage. Dashboard shows damage with missing components at the passenger side. Camper fixtures, furnace, electrical outlets, plumbing, appliances, and auxiliary systems have not been tested. The van has remained parked inside a steel building with a concrete floor for approximately 35 years. Mechanical condition is unknown and the vehicle should be considered non-running pending complete inspection and recommissioning.
