Rockingham-glazed ceramic spittoon featuring a low, wide form with a scalloped body and integral splash guard. Finished in a mottled brown-over-cream glaze characteristic of Rockingham ware, the surface shows heavy, expressive spotting and pooling created during the firing process. The interior basin includes a central opening, designed to reduce splash and aid in cleaning, while the broad base provides stability for floor use. Spittoons of this type were common fixtures in public and semi-public interiors-such as saloons, barber shops, hotels, and railroad offices-during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when chewing tobacco was widespread. Rockingham ware was especially favored for these utilitarian objects due to its durability, ease of manufacture, and ability to disguise wear and staining through its dark, variegated glaze. Surviving examples remain popular as decorative objects, valued for their bold form and unmistakable historical context.
Shows general surface wear consistent with age and use. No visible cracks noted. Glaze variation and firing marks are inherent to the manufacturing process.
