Heavy cast iron tobacco grinder featuring a cylindrical cutting chamber fitted with internal teeth and a hand-crank drive. The hinged upper section opens to reveal the toothed interior, allowing tobacco to be loaded directly into the chamber before grinding. A curved iron crank with a turned wooden handle provides leverage, while the squat, footed base was designed for stable tabletop or bench use. The construction is thick and overbuilt, emphasizing durability and consistent output rather than refinement. Tobacco grinders of this type were common in homes, general stores, and small tobacconists, where loose leaf tobacco was processed on demand. The design reflects a period when tobacco preparation was a hands-on, mechanical task, carried out with tools meant to last decades. The darkened iron surface and softened edges speak to long-term use, giving the piece a strong sculptural presence even at rest.
Shows overall antique wear with surface oxidation, patina, and discoloration consistent with age and use. Cast iron remains solid with no cracks observed. Crank turns and internal components appear intact. Sold as found.
