Artist: William Samuel Horton (1865–1936)
Date: c. 1915–1925
Medium: Pastel on paper
Style/Movement: American Impressionism

Additional Details: William Samuel Horton (1865–1936) was a highly regarded American Impressionist painter known for his atmospheric landscapes of the American West, particularly the Sierra Nevada and Yosemite regions. This vertically oriented pastel depicts a cascading mountain waterfall flowing through a rocky evergreen landscape beneath mist-covered peaks. The composition displays the soft transitions, luminous atmosphere, and romantic treatment of nature associated with Horton’s work. Signed “Horton” at the lower left and presented in a period gilt gesso frame, the work is attributed to Horton based on its style, subject matter, signature, and framing.

Displays age-related wear consistent with age and display. The pastel appears to have been framed without a protective fixative, resulting in areas of pigment transfer to the interior surface of the glass. Water damage is present in the upper left portion of the artwork, as shown in the photographs. The period gilt frame exhibits significant losses to the gesso and gilded finish throughout, exposing the reddish bole beneath. The upper right frame corner has a small chip. The artwork remains secure within the frame; however, at least eight retaining brad nails are missing, one remaining brad nail on the upper right reverse protrudes from the frame, and additional stabilization may be warranted. The reverse retains an old cardboard backing with an obscured inscription that has been scribbled out.
