Group of seven antique spring balance hand scales produced by Foster, Chatillon, and Excelsior, representing common portable weighing tools used in shops, markets, and agricultural settings during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Each scale features a brass or steel body with an integrated graduated window, suspension ring at the top, and a forged hook at the base for hanging goods. Several retain clearly stamped maker names and capacity markings, while others show softened lettering from prolonged use. Spring balance scales of this type were widely employed for weighing produce, feed, parcels, and hardware, prized for their compact form and mechanical simplicity. Makers such as Foster, Chatillon, and Excelsior were among the best-known American producers of precision and semi-precision scales, supplying both commercial and industrial markets.
