c. 1860s-1880s; (likely) Staffordshire Potteries – England Hand-painted Staffordshire pottery spill vase depicting a stag pursued by a hound through a wooded landscape. The piece features vivid green underglaze foliage with orange and brown highlights on the stag, balanced by the crisp white of the hound and tree base. A small cylindrical opening at the top was intended to hold spills-twisted paper tapers used for lighting candles or hearth fires. Produced in the late Victorian period, this form exemplifies the lively pastoral and sporting scenes popular in Staffordshire’s mid-19th century decorative ceramics. The potteries of this region-many family-run and cottage-based-specialized in narrative figural groups that celebrated everyday and country life.
Shows light surface wear, minor firing imperfections, and typical age-related crazing to the glaze; no major losses or cracks noted.
