C-18009
c. 1940s-1950s; Carlisle Manufacturing Co. – Newark, NJ Steel-bodied cooler in original blue paint with hinged lid, side handles, and latch hardware. The front retains its original paper label reading "Royal No. 12 Portable Pic-Nik Refrigerator – Leakproof – Manufactured Exclusively by Carlisle Mfg. Co., Newark, N.J." with illustrations of leisure activities including camping, fishing, picnicking, and beach outings. Carlisle Mfg. Co., established in 1903, produced steel goods and portable coolers marketed under the "Royal" brand. Their Pic-Nik refrigerators were among the earliest widely distributed portable ice chests in America, designed for family recreation and postwar leisure culture. Intended for use with block or regular ice, these units allowed food and drink to stay cold in an era before plastic coolers became standard.
Surface wear, scratches, oxidation, and paint loss present throughout, consistent with outdoor use; label shows fading and loss but remains legible.
