General Antiques and Collectibles Spring Auction
Lot 231:
Description
C-17651
This antique stereoscope viewer was designed for home use, allowing stereograph cards to be seen in three dimensions. It features a turned wooden handle, wooden frame with adjustable card holder, and a metal viewing hood lined with felt for comfort. The wire card rest allows for depth adjustment to achieve a clear stereoscopic effect. Stereoscopes such as this became immensely popular in the late 1800s through early 1900s, serving both as parlor entertainment and educational tools, with sets of stereograph cards depicting travel, science, and world expositions.
This example shows age wear to the wood and patina to the hood but remains intact and functional.
