1927; The Whitehead & Hoag Co. – Newark, NJ Celluloid pinback button featuring a portrait of aviator Charles Lindbergh framed within a golden horseshoe motif with red, white, and blue bow. Beneath his image, the slogan "Plucky Lindy" is printed-part of the wave of patriotic memorabilia issued after Lindbergh’s historic nonstop solo transatlantic flight from New York to Paris in May 1927. Items like this pin were quickly produced to celebrate Lindbergh’s achievement, which captured the imagination of the American public and cemented him as a national hero. The horseshoe symbol of luck, combined with Lindbergh’s nickname, embodied the era’s admiration for his courage and skill.
