Large, ornately printed membership certificate issued to John Archibald Andrews, certifying his admission into the Illinois Society of the Sons of the American Revolution on April 20, 1900. The document features elaborate flowing Gothic script across the top reading “Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, ” flanked by detailed vignette engravings—one depicting Revolutionary soldiers in battle at left, and the other showing Washington crossing the Delaware at right. An American eagle with shield anchors the crest above, while a portrait medallion of George Washington appears in the lower right corner. A gold embossed seal with red, white, and blue ribbon remains affixed at the lower left, accompanied by multiple period signatures including state officers and national leadership. The piece is housed in a silver-painted wood frame with stepped molding.
Founded in 1889, the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution was established to preserve Revolutionary War lineage and patriotic memory, quickly forming state chapters such as Illinois to formalize hereditary membership among descendants of qualifying patriots.
Shows visible age toning throughout with scattered foxing, moisture staining concentrated along the upper field, and waviness to the paper. Frame exhibits surface wear and minor finish loss consistent with age. Seal and printed graphics remain intact and legible.
