Multi-Estate Spring 2026 Auction
Lot 480:
Description
C-19573
Oil on canvas portrait depicting a mustachioed gentleman dressed in seventeenth-century cavalier-style attire, signed and dated “Andreis 1922” at the lower right.
The composition shows the subject wearing a wide black hat, white ruffled collar, and a red cloak fastened with a vertical row of buttons. He holds a glove in one hand and faces the viewer in a formal half-length pose. The costume, including the broad hat, lace collar, and curled mustache, references seventeenth-century cavalier portraiture, a subject that remained popular in decorative and academic painting during the early twentieth century.
Two vertical tears are visible through the canvas, running through the center of the face from the forehead through the nose and mustache area. The canvas is also beginning to separate slightly from the frame and shows tape repairs on the reverse as photographed. Surface wear and light age-related craquelure are present.
