Multi-Estate Spring 2026 Auction
Lot 38:
Description
C-18596
c. 1890s–1900s; Woodruff & Edwards Co. – Elgin, IL Heavy cast iron countertop coffee grinder featuring twin spoked flywheels, an overhead hopper with domed lid, and a vivid red-painted cast eagle finial perched at the crown. Raised lettering around the wheel rims reads “ELGIN NATIONAL COFFEE MILL, ” framing the central grinding mechanism and reinforcing its commercial-grade intent. The opposing handwheels and stout pedestal base reflect a late-19th-century emphasis on balance, durability, and visual authority—an object designed to be both worked hard and seen.
Shows surface wear consistent with age, including oxidation, patina, and scattered paint loss to the eagle finial. The grinder appears to function as intended, with wheels turning and internal mechanism engaging. No cracks or major structural issues observed.
