Portable wooden painter’s case retaining its original interior label for Winsor & Newton, Inc., New York. The hinged lid opens to reveal a fitted interior with metal paint trays and mixing surface, along with a fold-out top lip designed to support a canvas while working. The case includes multiple period oil paints and artist tools, many adhered to the interior trays from age and use. Also housed within are personal effects belonging to Dorthea Emery, including a pocket calendar with handwritten journaling and school report cards from Aurora High School (West Side) in the 1910s. The exterior retains its dark stained finish with rounded corners and original hardware, including the working lock and key.
Latch for the exterior has broken off but is included inside the case. Key is present and locking mechanism functions. The flip-out canvas support lip is missing screws on one hinge set and wants to tilt forward. The metal housing frame for the key slot has fallen out but is included. Paints and materials show age; some are adhered to the trays. General surface wear, staining, and age-related marks throughout consistent with studio use.
