Early cast iron subway turnstile.
Salvaged from an abandoned stretch of New York City subway, this piece is one for the books. This particular style was designed by the company founder John Perey and company president (and former Olympic swimmer) Conrad Trubenback as an answer the New York subway foot traffic congestion. It operates in the traditional manner with the four swing arms turning and locking in place, unlocking for a quarter rotation by a press of the foot pedal on the base; the amount of turns is reflected on the top by a ticking counter that . Across the front is an embossed brass Perey identification plaque with the serial number marked along the bottom.
Exhibits heavy paint loss (and new coats that again chipped away) leaving a piece that may look rough, but operates as it was originally intended to.
