c. 1940s; Louis Marx & Co. – New York, NY (Distributed by Montgomery Ward, Chicago, IL) Boxed "Stream Line Steam Type Electrical Train" set by Louis Marx & Co., presented in its original corrugated shipping box with blue stenciled graphics and Montgomery Ward retail label. The set includes a black steam locomotive with tender, red caboose, assorted curved and straight tinplate track sections, and wiring components-neatly arranged in the original die-cut insert tray. This model represents one of Marx’s postwar electric train offerings, a durable and affordable alternative to Lionel that helped popularize model railroading for mid-century American families. Louis Marx & Co., founded in 1919, became one of the most prolific American toy manufacturers of the 20th century, producing tinplate trains, wind-up toys, and playsets that defined affordable quality during the post-Depression and postwar eras.
Box shows age wear, creasing, and discoloration consistent with long-term storage. Components exhibit moderate paint loss and oxidation typical of early tinplate train sets, with original inserts and decals remaining intact. Seems to be missing the glossy engine often found in this set.
