c. 1930s–1940s; South Dakota Art Pottery Co. – Redfield, SD Organic sculptural wax pottery form by South Dakota Art Pottery Co., featuring a vertically oriented, root- or branch-like silhouette with flowing contours and a high-gloss brown marbled glaze. The piece exemplifies the company’s distinctive wax-resist technique, where layered slips and glazes create richly variegated surfaces with a sense of natural movement. A small applied pinecone motif and incised pine needle detailing further anchor the form in regional, nature-inspired design, while the upward-reaching profile gives the piece a strong sculptural presence beyond its functional role.
Makers mark on bottom. Shows light surface wear consistent with age, including minor scuffing to the glaze and wear to the base. No cracks or repairs observed; glaze remains glossy and visually strong.
