Vintage Hinamatsuri (Girl’s Day) porcelain doll in a plexiglass case, with a letter from the sender.
Hinamatsuri, known as Girl’s Day or Doll’s Day, is a yearly celebration in Japan that is one of the five seasonal festivals (, gosekku) that are held on auspicious dates of the Lunisolar calendar; it is meant to celebrate the health and happiness of young girls and women. This doll, and others like it, are gifted from the family to girls and put on display to ensure not just health and happiness, but an early marriage. Typically sold in sets with a display platform, these pieces are often expensive ($1500-$2500) and are known to be handed down as heirlooms.
This piece includes a framed, handwritten letter from an "Atsushi Yamada", apparently someone who spent time in America with a host family and gifted this to them upon returning to Japan. It includes some brief Japanese translations and what appears to be a very personal note for the daughter, Geneva. Doll is in excellent display condition.
