Lot 466:
Description
C-20414
c. 1920s–1930s; (likely) Hubley Manufacturing Company – Lancaster, PA Cast iron figural toy depicting a hand-operated fire pumper cart, finished in black with a brass-toned boiler top and bright yellow spoked wheels. The central form represents a vertical boiler-style fire engine with molded banding, fittings, and a side housing, mounted between two large, finely cast wheels. At the front, a standing figure leans forward in a pushing stance while a seated operator in red appears to work the mechanism, creating a sense of coordinated motion between figures and machine. The exaggerated linkage arms and utilitarian construction give the piece a distinctly mechanical presence, rooted in early firefighting equipment where manpower drove the pump.
Shows moderate to heavy paint loss throughout, especially on high points and edges, with chipping visible on the yellow wheels and red figure. Surface wear and oxidation consistent with age and handling; no structural breaks observed.
