Description

C-18795

Woven round sewing basket constructed from natural reed with integrated loop handles, accompanied by a group of handmade fabric pincushions, a small cast iron sadiron, and a cylindrical hand pump. The basket holds several cloth pincushions stitched from assorted patterned textiles including calico, gingham, and printed cottons, along with loose sewing notions. The pincushions display irregular forms and visible hand-stitching, consistent with scrap-based, homemade sewing accessories. The group also includes a compact cast iron sadiron with a wooden handle, used for pressing seams and small garments, and a cylindrical hand pump with a wooden handle, likely used for inflating or cleaning purposes within the domestic workspace. Together, these objects form a cohesive snapshot of a working sewing and mending setup, where tools accumulated organically over time rather than as matched sets. The emphasis throughout is on durability, utility, and daily use rather than decorative refinement.

Shows wear throughout including surface abrasion, darkening to the basket fibers, and minor rim deformation consistent with age and use. Pincushions exhibit fabric wear, fading, and loose threads. The sadiron shows surface oxidation and patina; the pump shows wear to the metal body and wooden handle. All wear is consistent with prolonged household use.
