Lot 68:
Description
C-18866
1958 and 1905 ; Simon and Schuster – New York, New York / Saalfield Publishing Company – Akron, Ohio Two early culinary reference books representing European and American domestic cooking traditions. The group includes The Art of French Cooking, a comprehensive guide to classical French cuisine with illustrated plated dishes and structured recipe sections, and The White House Cook Book, an expansive American household manual combining recipes, food preparation, etiquette, and domestic instruction. Together, these volumes reflect the formalization of home cooking and culinary education during the early 20th century.
Both books show honest age-related wear. Bindings exhibit surface wear, edge softening, and rubbing, with areas of staining and discoloration to the cloth covers. One volume contains handwritten recipe notes and annotations as photographed. Interior pages are largely intact and readable, with expected toning from age. Overall condition is consistent with well-used but preserved kitchen reference books.
